Solarbear aims for a functional product that enables a high level of empowerment for local communities. Not only by offering a functional system: getting refrigeration to places which have not yet been elecrified, but also in terms of design, production and sales. As the essential system parts are mass produced, local entrepreneurs are enabled to be involved in either the assembly and production, but moreover, local values, traditions are reflected in the design; cocreation.

The most important focus point of the solarbear refrigertation system is the aim to aid local economies by producing and using the system. To make the system economically viable for the developing world, its costs have to be kept as low as possible, and as much of the system has to be handled locally. Therefore, the total refrigeration system has been seperated into the essential working system and the accessory system - without the essential system, it would not work, while accessory items increase efficiency (& costs), and are incorperated locally. The essential system, kept as simplistic as possible, is supplemented by (local) accesory items, i.e. insulation and selective coatings.
